WCCO-TV serves as the CBS affiliate for the Twin Cities. It is owned and operated by CBS, WCCO also operates KCCO-TV 7 in Alexandria and KCCW-TV 12 in Walker. WCCO currently broadcasts from their studios in downtown Minneapolis.
WCCO started as WTCN-TV and went on-air on July 1st, 1949 as Minnesota's second TV station. In 1952 WTCN and its radio counterpart was sold to Midwest Radio & TV Inc. and changed its call letters to WCCO and the radio to WCCO-AM (830) and WCCO-FM (102.9 now WLTE). WCCO channel 4 is also the only station in the Twin Cities to never change allifiation. After a studio renovation in 1956 the station grew and moved to a new building in downtown Minneapolis in 1983. In 1977 WCCO had a new logo the circle 4 with a blue background and its newscasts were titled as News Watch 4.
In 1992 WCCO was purchased by CBS, however didn't follow the CBS Mandate since it is branded as WCCO 4 instead of CBS4, others such as WBZ-TV in Boston & KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh don't follow it as well. In 1995 the station did a newscast on KLGT-TV (now WUCW) branded as News of Your Choice, which the anchors described the things coming up on each channel giving viewers an option of which station to watch. This ended about a year later.
WCCO-TV began broadcasting news in High Definition on Saturday, May 30th, 2009 at 5:00PM. Therefore becoming the third station in the cities to broadcast news in High Definition.
